The Pursuit of Happiness: 15 Lessons to Keep in Mind

1. The only person that can ever truly make you happy is
yourself. Stop depending on everyone else.

2. People lie, stuff happens. Don’t take it too personally.
3. Want people to think you’re amazing? Start believing you are, and then they will too.

4. Smiling is the ultimate anti-depressant. Smile and laugh out loud, it doesn’t look stupid, I promise.

5. The world is never just black and white, right or wrong, one way or another. Try and see things from as many points of view as possible.

6. "Let everything happen to you
Beauty and terror
Just keep going
No feeling is final"
Rainer Maria Rilke

7. Have empathy.

8. Gossip, problems of the past, events you cannot control, negative thoughts and negative people; time spent on these is time poorly wasted.

9. When you're jealous or find yourself filled with hate for someone/something, stop. The only person its hurting is you.

10. Although the newest, most expensive material things may make you feel as if you’re a better person, they won’t hold you at night or listen to you when you need it. Make sure your priorities make sense.

11. Step outside your comfort zone- it’s when you’ll really feel alive.

12. Don’t be afraid to be yourself, the people who really matter, don’t mind

13. Let your emotions out sometimes, humans have them for a reason.

14. Celebrate the things you have. Think only positively of the things you don’t (but would like to have) and they too will come.

15. Love unconditionally ♥.

  4. These are some of the most cliche and overused quotes I've read in a while. They barely reach the surface of true in depth thinking.

  5. For my part i found it a little trite and cliched (is that splet right?) but I'm glad it made other people smile.

  6. I agree with 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th 11th 12th, 14th, and 15th if you've had a bad past it will effect you some point or the other and sometimes it may help coz people may see why you reacting the way you are, For the first one, if it weren't for everyone else i couldn't be happy, coz it makes me happy making other people happy :), the second one it is hard for many people to do and also kinda depends on what you go through, the thrid one is somewhat true, but as long as you don't be big headed bout yourself, though for me it is hard to think of myself as amazing unless i do something amazing the helps people, the 13th one i duno its probly best to but i prefer not to burden people with my problems. it's a good read to be honest, nice work, hopefully it helps the people that need it :)

  7. Thank you so much for your input everyone! I love reading all your comments.

And Joe, I definitely agree that some of these can't apply to everyone or every situation. I think any list like this will always be subjective in that, as a whole, it won't be directly applicable to everyone because we are all so different and have led different lives. I just tried to take some lessons that I have learned myself thus far in life and hoped that maybe some other people might find them useful to keep in mind as well.

Thanks for your comment, really appreciate it :)

  8. These are guidelines everyone should live by everyday!! Perfect.

  9. I wish I could just show this list to people and they would start adopting this attitude. However, I believe they are learned through experience and mistakes. I really enjoyed your post, though! Glad someone shares my view on life.

  15. It's amazing post. The most impressive one is the first thing.
As you said, the things make me happy or sad is up to how I think. It's like half-full or half- empty glass of water.

  16. I watch as bubbles rise and pop in the pudding boiling on a stove top.
It's not a shame that they are not all the same
They are still part of it all
    Even when they fall
    Every life
    has a boiling point
The bubble will burst and you will fall
    Return to all
    And rise again
    Same Place
    Different Time
    Different Bubble
Some bubbles last longer than others
    Some never fully develop
    All Fall
    And Rise Again.
    You are not the bubble
    You are the vapor
    escaping the pot.
Eat your pudding our you can't have any super!

  18. Great list! The best one is #1. When we realize we hold the key to our own true happiness, then we can start to live a much better life.

There are so many people who could benefit from this list. We all need to learn how to live happier lives.

    Thanks for this inspirational post!

  19. I don't understand. I've read about 10,000 of these things, telling me how to be happy (contradictive of #1), but every single one of them have comments saying how amazing and unique that specific one is. I wish this crap would stop coming up on StumbleUpon.

  20. I absolutely love this! Whoever wrote it, way to brighten a persons day =)

  38. dear anonymous at the top of these comments...you are a sourpuss and not everything needs to be deep. Ive done some very deep thinking about life and it only makes me miserable. Simpleness can be happiness, and happiness can surely be simple

    ReplyDelete
  39. "Life is not complex. We are complex. Life is simple,
and the simple thing is the right thing."

For the trollers crying about how this isn't a deep enough pattern of thought. The above quote comes from Oscar Wilde. A man who lived an extremely difficult, complicated life where he was often persecuted for being who he was. I'd take more notice of life lessons from a man who actually lived life, rather than some faceless blog troller, who cries about a lack of depth in people's thinking, yet fails to provide any depth in their own critiques.

  53. Sorry, but 1. Contradicts 10. - How to be really happy then? Alone or with significant others? Don´t you depend emotionally on them? Isn´t that part of having relationships, depending on others.
    2. Taking things personally - If someone physically assault me, kill someone i love, etc... shouldn´t i take it personally? You shoudn´t, that´s right, because it did not happened to you!
    3. Sorry, some people ARE amazing, some just AREN´T, independently of how strongly you believe that.
    4. No, asmile and laugh out loud doesn´t make you look studip, maybe just insensitive at a funeral.
    5. Yes, the world isn´t black and white, etc., 15 lessons which everyone could take to be happier reflects diversity.
    6. Some feelings are final, like the ones you may have just before you die...
Have empathy (7), but also accept your just human (13; being jealous (9) or having negative thoughs (8) are also human emotions and you better recognize them before you denie them and end up having a rage tantrum and locked up.
    11. Step outside of your confor zone, unless you are in a war zone, in that case you may just lay low.
    12. Don´t be afraid to be yourself, unless your a lunatic with perverted thoughts...
    14. Having positive thoughts do not put food in the, presently, world population dying of starvation. F....* the secret
    15. Please do not love inconditionally if your in a abusive relationship. In that case, get out!!!

If they make you happy, please keep posting and reading these type of cliche phrases, just don´t try to convice everyone that they actually work equally for evryone and every situation.

    ReplyDelete
  54. Jesus is the only person who can make you happy... just sayin.

    ReplyDelete
  55. this just made my day so much better!!! well put

    ReplyDelete
  56. AWESOME!!!! Truly inspirational!!!

  57. Cannot help but agree with the many "sourpuss" comments, this advice is killing the children of the current generation. Some things must be taken seriously, there is a time for everything, including sadness and anger, but forgiveness is important as well. Many of these things are good things to be capable of, but to claim they will make you happy... well... "The only person that can ever make you truly happy is yourself. Stop depending on everyone else" that may be the saddest way to live your life imaginable, please do not encourage people to believe that you can make yourself truly happy, loneliness is not happiness, and if no one is building you up and making you more happy, then you are alone. Friends are necessary in life.

The best way to happiness is through the Lord "Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious JOY, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls." 1 Peter 1:8-9
With the Lord, you are never alone.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Thanks, it's really nice!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I'm really sorry- but I have to agree with some of the so-called "sour puss" comments too.
I am also pretty sick of stumbling upon reams of re-cycled happiness quotes. Yeah there are some nice ideas here, but it all just starts to feel like muzak after a while, and it's the blitheness with which it gets trotted out that's disturbing.
And Oscar Wilde? Really?? I's be very surprised. I've read a lot of his stuff, and none of it so far resembles anything like the above. His are much more salty and well...cynical (beautifully, poignantly so).
Lastly, smiling is absolutely NOT the ultimate anti-depressant. When one is truly depressed or unhappy, it just makes you feel like you're dying inside. In my experience, it's the smilers who end up topping themselves. Sorry- but it's true:(
All just a bit simplistic. (Which is different to simple).

    ReplyDelete
  60. 8 and 13 are contradictory

    ReplyDelete
  61. Thanks for sharing this thoughts, thumbs up all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  62. Thanks for reading everyone. Again, I appreciate all your comments so much... so sincerely, thank you.
To those of you who enjoyed, I'm so glad you did... it honestly makes my day reading your comments.
To those criticizing, I appreciate your comments as well but I'd just like to add that no one has claimed that these are supposed to be laws, deep philosophy, that everyone must agree or anything of the sorts.
It's just a happy list in hopes that people may enjoy it, find it useful, inspiring, etc.

It would be impossible for me to write a list that everyone agreed upon on every point in all the same ways... the world will never be that way. So as you write your comments please try to keep the subjectivity of this list and furthermore, the subjectivity of your comments in mind... neither are really right or wrong.

    Peace & Love,
    Samm

  63. How many of us on the plane?billions so is it a surprise stuff has been seen read and listened to before. But to each originator it is a genuine. We need to be realistic and respectful not so cynical wool is being pulled over our eyes when in all innocence truth is being put out there.

It´s all about our negative thoughts, our bad feelings. These emotions are layers over ourselves. When we learn to let go these emotions, we can see the person that we really are: the ideal ourselves.

    Thank you.
    ---------

  106. There are people starving to death all over the world. A woman is violently raped every 4 minutes. Poor people in the US are treated like dirt. There is pain, sadness, terror, and horror. Our government (US) has its hands in all of it. We've slaughtered an entire country, and opened our own Little Shop of Horrors over in Cuba so as not to have to take any responsibility for it.

My daughter has been missing for two years, her younger siblings are traumatized more than I ever imagined. Somebody else's kid has a painful, degenerative disease. Babies are born dead, mothers die in childbirth, man fly airplanes into buildings. Families are losing their homes, living in the streets. In Haiti they're still living in squalor on one side of the island while rich people indulge themselves on the other side.

Nature is amazing, though. There's a new amoeba in Louisiana that is eating people's brains, literally and as we speak. Current thinking is that BP's horrific oil spill triggered the mutation that resulted in this new hell for Louisiana and its neighbors in the gulf.

Our government is so corrupt we might as well live in Saudi Arabia.

Thank god for that little daisy in my front yard - now I can forget about all that!

    ReplyDelete
  107. then maybe you should focus more on that little daisy and any other positive thing (as I am sure there has to be something) you are alive, you have a roof over your head, food in your belly, people who love you)I am truly sorry about your daughter, but instead of thinking the worst have faith and believe everything will turn out alright and God for bid if it doesn't do something positive in her name and honour the time you did have with her, easier said than done I know but if you focus on what you did have and bring that to life in a positive way it will change your whole thought process.... after reading how you focus all your time and energy reading and thinking and dwelling on the negative in the world don't ya think it would be better to find something good instead of all the bad, your choice how you spend your time thinking, The voice inside can be our best friend or worst enemy, depending on which one we feed....just saying. Watching the Secret could change your perception on how our thought process can actually control our lives without most of us even being aware, best of luck to you

    ReplyDelete
  118. this is truly what i try to express to people. im not a psychologist, im not a philosopher, im just a person that likes to help show people how to live a better life. its things like this that really outline some of the best things you can possibly say in a nutshell. there is always going to be hard things to go through, but whats judged upon you is not how those actions took place, but how well you accepted those events, and how you as a person could handle them.that is what people will think of you for, so even if you are a person that strives for others acceptance, just remember that strength in yourself, is confidence throughout the world.

i thank whoever took the time to make such a page, it can really help the people that feel they have no one to turn to. and if you feel like your one of those people, pay closer attention, chances are, there's someone that wants to help, but you just haven't noticed them. nobody, is truly alone.

    ReplyDelete
  119. There are many ways I could respond to this post... But I think the most heartfelt and honest way is;

    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
  120. It's nice, but sadly, it isn't that easy.

    ReplyDelete
  121. Think of yourself as amazing and everyone else will - well, Jeremy Clarkson, George Osbourne, they clearly think of themselves as more than special, but the rest of us - we can see otherwise!

    ReplyDelete
  122. Wow.. There are a lot of fools commenting here. Just because one has the ability to be happy on their own does not mean you should be alone nor does it mean you should just ignore all the horrible things going on in the world.

But the simple fact is if you can't be happy chances are you can't make anyone else happy for too long either. And people not being happy and worrying about every little thing other than their own lives is part of the reason things are so f*cked up to begin with.

Happiness does not come from outside of you. Happiness is a choice YOU as human being make. It is making the choice to dwell on positive thoughts instead of negative ones and so many of you have just given a perfect example of how you shouldn't let your thoughts control you..

    ReplyDelete
  123. i wish everyone could read this

    ReplyDelete
  124. I really like this post..
Dislike all the people that can sit here and read something so nice and heart warming, and literally take all positive things out of it. Save all the negativity for your own life instead of throwing it out into others faces.
